Guadalajara GP Day 2 Overview of American Players' Performance

Three American players made it to the quarterfinals stage: Jack Yonezuka, Dominic Rodriguez and Johan Silot.

Men’s -73kg

In Pool B, Cole Chandler lost his first-round match to Andres Pariche (VEN), though it was a close match. Chandler scored first, countering Pariche’s attempt to do a Mollaei-styled reverse kata-guruma, for waza-ari. Pariche struck back with a kosoto-gari for waza-ari. Pariche won the match by scoring yuko with tani-otoshi in Golden Score. In Pool D, Jack Yonezuka won his first match, against Anton Shuhalieiev (ESP) by pinning him for ippon. He lost his quarterfinal match, against Chusniddin Karimov (CZE), who threw him with kouchi-gari for waza-ari. He then lost his repechage match against Martin Hojak, who did a direct-attack tani-otoshi for ippon.

Women’s -63kg
In Pool B, Emily Daniela Jaspe did a very nice reverse sankaku jime on Naomi Pozo Flores (MEX) for ippon. Although it could have been a pin as well, her opponent tapped out due to the strangle, which was very tight and effective. Jaspe lost her next match, to Inbal Shemesh (ISR) who threw her with a drop-knee ippon-seoi-nage for ippon. In Pool C, Karlee Carrouth lost to Mina Libeer (BEL) who threw her with a Heydarov-styled drop kata-guruma for waza-ari.

Men’s -81kg
In this category, both players made it to the quarterfinals. In Pool A, Dominic Rodriguez threw Ivan Mihalovs (LAT) with uchimata and tsubame-gaeshi for yuko each, and then pinned him for ippon. He had a good win against the very experienced Francois Gauthier Drapeau (CAN), throwing him with hiza-guruma for yuko. He lost his quarterfinal fight against Vusal Galandarzade (AZE) who threw him with hikikomi-gaeshi for yuko in the opening seconds, and then held on to that lead until time ran out. Rodriguez lost his repechage match when Mykhailo Svidrak (UKR) countered him with a massive tsubame-gaeshi for ippon in under 10 seconds. In Pool C, Johan Silot had a bye in his first round, and won his first match, against Vincenzo Pelligra (ITA) by pinning him for ippon after the Italian player attempted a yoko-tomoe-nage. He lost his quarterfinal match when Zelim Tckaev armlocked him for ippon. Silot lost his repechage match against Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal, who threw him with ouchi-gari in Golden Score. Silot had beaten Del Orbe in the recent Lima Grand Prix quarterfinal.

Women’s -70kg
In Pool A, Melissa Myers was turned over with a kata-gatame roll and pinned for ippon in the first minute. In Pool D, Yasmin Alamin lost to Ida Eriksson (SWE) who got four scores on her. First, she threw Alamin with uchimata-makikomi and then pinned her for waza-ari. Next, she threw her with uchimata again, scoring another yuko and then caught her with an ude-garami armlock.
