Adrian Sulca said, "I’ve been working so hard for this moment. My toughest opponent is me. I have to repeat to myself to not give up. I didn’t give up! I had fun on the mat and now I’m world champion. Next step: the senior category!"

The defending Junior World Champion Szofi Ozbas (HUN) may have been the favorite but it was Joanne Van Lisehout (NED) who was on fire in Olbia. After defeating Ozbas, she worked her way to the final where she met Laura Vazquez Fernandez (ESP). Van Lisehout scored waza-ari but wasn’t content to coast for the rest of the match. With about a minute left in the match, she caught her Spanish opponent on the ground and pinned her for ippon.
