-48kg Gold: Koga (JPN)

-48kg Gold: Koga (JPN)

Wakana Koga (JPN) blitzed through all of her matches with ashiwaza of some kind and would often end it with some newaza.

She took her first opponent, Ho Lok Yi (HKG), down with ouchi-gari for yuko, then proceeded to pin her. The referee stopped the hold down and gave her opponent her third shido for wrapping her legs around Koga's head.

Against Amber Gersjes (NED), she used kosoto-gari for yuko and osoto-gari for ippon. She then threw her quarterfinal opponent Sabina Giliazova (RUS) with kouchi-gari and ouchi-gari, both for yuko, before pinning her for ippon.

For her semifinal match, against Baasankhuu Bavuudorj (MGL), Koga used ouchi-gari again. It scored waza-ari, and was enough to win her the match.

In the final, Koga once again relied on her favorite ouchi-gari to take down her opponent, Assunta Scutto (ITA), for a yuko score. She then proceeded to pin her for ippon.

After a World silver and two World bronzes, Koga had finally become World Champion.
